Smart Step operates recovery residences — ordinary houses on ordinary streets, with clear standards and people who want you to make it. We also work to keep affordable housing from disappearing.

What living here is actually like
No surprises after you move in. This is the whole shape of it.
- You sign an occupancy agreement
- You get a bed, a key, and a written copy of what's expected — in your hand before you move in, not sprung on you afterwards.
- You pay a weekly program fee
- A weekly fee, plus a one-time move-in fee — the current schedule is available once you sign in. Nothing to pay to apply, and we'll tell you every number before you commit to anything.
- There's a curfew, chores, and meetings
- Curfew is {{CURFEW TIME}}. Everyone carries a share of the house. Structure is the thing that works — it isn't punishment.
- There's random screening
- {{SCREENING FREQUENCY}}, at random. If something comes back positive you get a conversation with a person, not an automatic exit.
- Prescribed medication is welcome
- Stopping or reducing medication a doctor prescribed you is never a condition of living here. Stored securely, taken as prescribed.
- Your information stays yours
- Nothing goes to a court or coordinator without a release you signed, and you can withdraw it in writing. How we handle records.
What Smart Step is not
Not a medical provider
We don't provide medical care or counseling. We're housing and peer support, and we'll say so to anyone who asks.
Not locked, not court custody
Residents live here voluntarily and can leave. We report only what someone has consented in writing to share.
Not a guarantee
Recovery isn't linear and we won't pretend otherwise. What we promise is a stable place and a fair process.

Smart Step is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, EIN 33-1822772. Gifts are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law and go to keeping beds available for people leaving a program, a cell, or a crisis.
