How it works

From the first message to the day you move on. No surprises, no hidden steps, no cost you find out about after you have moved your things in.

Getting in

Step 1

You reach out

Apply yourself, or have someone refer you — a family member, a court, an agency, a recovery program, a hospital. We ask for your name, a way to contact you, the county you would like to be in, and when you could move.

If someone else is applying on your behalf, they are asked to confirm they hold your signed release first. We do not take a third party's word about your recovery without it.

Step 2

We talk

A real conversation, not a form. What you need, what you are working with, what is open, and what it costs. This is also where we tell you if Smart Step is not the right fit — if you need medical care first, we would rather say so now.

Step 3

You tour the home

Before you commit to anything, you see the house you would be living in and meet the people there. Nobody moves into a Smart Step residence sight unseen — the tour is a requirement of our own move-in process, not a nice extra.

Step 4

You read and sign

Three documents, and you get to read all of them before signing:

  • The occupancy agreement — your right to live here, tied to being in the program.
  • The program participation agreement — what you agree to while you are here.
  • The house standards — the rules of the house, the same for everyone.

Signing is electronic and we record which version you signed and when. If the documents change later, you see the new version and sign again. You are never held to a rule you never read.

Step 5

You move in

The one-time move-in fee of $150 is due at move-in, and the weekly program fee of $250 starts. You get a bed, secure storage for medication, and a house that already knows your name.

Living here

The structure is the point. It is the same every week, which is exactly what makes it work when everything else is unpredictable.

The weekly program fee

Due weekly, in advance. It covers housing, utilities, and running the program. It is not charged for a room — it is your part of keeping the program going. If money gets tight, talk to us early. Going quiet is the only thing that turns a hard week into a real problem.

Screening

Random drug and alcohol screening, for everyone. Not a trap and not a punishment — it is what makes the house safe enough for the person who is three days in.

Curfew and check-in

You check in at the house. The point is simple: the house knows everybody got home.

Chores and meetings

You take a share of the work of running the home, and you keep up the recovery support you agreed to outside it.

Your medical care is yours

Smart Step does not provide medical care or counselling. You keep your own doctors. If you take physician-prescribed medication as part of your recovery, that is welcome here — it is stored securely and you take it yourself.

Your privacy

Nothing about you goes to a court, an officer, or an agency without a signed and dated release from you, and you can withdraw it. Residents also agree not to disclose who they met here.

If it does not work out

We would rather be straight with you now than surprise you later. Your agreement can be ended — immediately for violence, threats, weapons, or drugs or alcohol on the premises, and otherwise on 24 hours' notice for not keeping to the program. If you leave belongings behind, we hold them for seven days.

Leaving is also always your choice. You can end your participation at any time, and you can come back and talk to us about applying again.

Moving on

There is no fixed sentence here and no clock counting down on the wall. People stay while the program is doing its job — while they are working the standards, and while the structure is still holding something together. Then, usually, work steadies, savings start, and somewhere of their own becomes possible.

That is the whole aim: for a Smart Step home to be the place someone lived while things got steady, not the place they stayed.

Ready, or nearly?

Apply for housing. If you are placing someone, send us a referral. If you just have a question, contact us — asking costs nothing.
