Delete your account

How to remove your SteppingForward login, what that does, and what Smart Step still keeps.

Deleting it from the app

Open SteppingForward, go to Account (it is also on the Support screen), and choose Delete account. You will be asked to confirm. Nobody has to approve it and you do not have to explain why.

If you can no longer sign in, email info@smartstepinc.org from the address on your account and ask us to delete it for you.

What deleting removes

  • Your login. You will not be able to sign in again, on any device.
  • Your profile — the name, contact details and role attached to that login.
  • The device token used to send you notifications, so the app stops reaching you.
  • The in-app record of the agreements you signed and the courses you completed. If you return to the program later, you'll be asked to read and sign them again.

What Smart Step still keeps, and why

Deleting your login does not erase your program record. Smart Step is a housing provider with record-keeping duties to funders, to regulators, and to an accurate history of decisions about a home someone lived in. Those records are unlinked from your login, so signing in can never reach them again, but they are not destroyed.

Records that stay include:

  • Identity and contact details held on the program record, and dates of residence
  • Curfew, chore and class check-ins
  • Drug screening schedules and results
  • Incident and house standards reports
  • Program fee payments and their status
  • Messages exchanged with the Smart Step team

How long they are kept is set by our retention schedule: still being finalised; until it is published here, we keep each record only as long as the purposes above require.

Asking for more than the login

You can ask what is held about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete information we are not required to keep. Write to info@smartstepinc.org. Our target for a first response is 5 business days.

Records about a person's recovery are handled under stricter rules than the rest — see our confidentiality notice and our privacy policy.

Deleting your account does not end your housing

Your place in a Smart Step recovery residence is governed by your occupancy agreement, not by whether you use the app. If you want to talk about leaving, speak to your house manager.
